Designers often use materials that match their design goals.
But what about materials that don’t fit the job?
For example, the design team for The Last of Us made the game’s world look too dark and gritty, so they added more light and shading.
But the team didn’t get the desired effect by doing that.
So, they re-did the game with materials that looked good and matched the game world.
It’s not uncommon for designers to think that they need to create a new material every time they redesign a piece of the game.
But they shouldn’t be afraid to experiment.
“You can have your materials in your head all the time,” says Michael Cappuccio, a materials scientist at Cornell University.
“There’s a reason why designers are obsessed with these things.”
And materials are the ones that help make the final product look and feel right.
“The design process starts with a very deep understanding of what a game is about and the kinds of people you want in it,” says Cappucci.
“That’s why a lot of designers think about their game as a puzzle and the end product is a set of pieces that can fit together to form a whole puzzle.”
So, what’s in a game?
There are many types of materials available to make a game, but Cappucio says materials have a strong influence on the final result.
For example: a game like World of Warcraft uses a light, flexible material called neoprene that allows the game to feel light and flexible, says Cauco.
That’s why the game can have multiple characters on a battlefield, which makes for a more varied and fluid experience.
But neoprenees are typically used for more than just that, because they have high density.
A lightweight, flexible polyurethane used in shoes, for example, can also help make games feel more rigid.
But in the case of a game with a lot more characters, a lighter material is more suitable, and designers tend to use that to their advantage.
So for the designers at Telltale Games, neopresens is key.
“Neoprene is really a high-performance material,” says Telltale’s Matt McCormack.
“We’ve used it in a lot and really liked it, so we wanted to try something new.”
The game world of The Last Of Us uses a lightweight, flexable material called NeoP, which has good density, so it’s ideal for the game designers at The Last Game, the studio that created the game for Telltale.
The Last Games team has used this material to its advantage, so the game looks much better when viewed from the front.
McCormack says that because of this, neophase is often used to add texture to objects.
In the game The Last Day, for instance, the player must wear an elastic belt to protect himself from a zombie attack, which creates a nice feeling of elasticity and safety.
McCormacks says that it’s not often that designers need to experiment with new materials, but when they do, he says, the results are usually spectacular.
“Once you have a design that works, it’s very easy to tweak and tweak,” says McCormack, “and that’s what makes the process so exciting.”
